Guangqi Honda’s slogan states, “Moving the World”. A brand that is deeply trusted and loved by a vast number of Chinese automotive consumers, Guangqi Honda resolves to provide drivers with great enjoyment and pleasure, using the most advanced environmental, safety, and comfort technologies.
Formerly Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., Guangqi Honda Automobile Co., Ltd. (Guangqi Honda) is a joint venture funded and established by Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. and Japan’s Honda Motor Co., Ltd. on 1 July 1998. The company has a total annual production capacity of 480,000 vehicles across its two manufacturing sites in Huangpu and Zengcheng, churning out seven series of automobiles under the Honda and Everus brands – Crosstour, Accord, Odyssey, Vezel, Crider, City, Fit, and Everus S1. In addition, Guangqi Honda also imports and sells hybrid vehicles (Honda CR-Z and Fit Hybrid). At the end of 2013, Guangqi Honda attained a cumulative production and sales of 3 million vehicles in China, winning the trust of Chinese customers and society at large.
Behind Guangqi Honda’s technology commitment and rapid growth is its diligent and tireless pursuit for product quality. Right from design through to completion, each component and spare part is manufactured with continuous improvement in mind, undergoing the processes of inspection, correction, and re-testing until the desired result is achieved. An indispensable part of this work is in the high precision testing equipment, and FARO is very honored to be counted among the rigorous inspection system that Guangqi Honda uses.

This story features the team from Guangqi Honda’s Second Welding Section in the Vehicle Body Department and their experience with the FaroArm. In the past, they used a measuring arm from another supplier, but it fell into disuse just within a year. The team then learnt about FARO and its products’ capabilities online, which prompted further research and comparison. Eventually, Guangqi Honda purchased two units of the six-axis, 1.2m FaroArm in 2008 for the First and Second Welding Sections.
Since the purchase, the FaroArm has enjoyed wide acceptance from the technical personnel at Guangqi Honda. Its portability, high precision, and easy after-sales servicing process were some of its most favored features. More importantly, the FaroArm provided users with higher repeatability, better reproducibility, and lasting stability. Mr. Li Shuxin, Engineer from the Second Welding Section, Guangqi Honda, indicated, “We are very satisfied with the FaroArm’s performance. In fact, we recommended it to our colleagues from other departments, and even our suppliers.”
In 2014, the company further invested in a new seven-axis, 1.35m FARO Edge ScanArm ES to cater to its increase in measurement needs.

Armed with scanning functionalities, the FaroArm that Guangqi Honda purchased can carry out pointto- point contact measurements, as well as obtain non-contact surface scans. The device enables users to inspect complex parts, as well as carry out graphical analyses and comparisons easily and quickly, providing much convenience and time-savings to the team.
Mr. Zhang Quankun, Engineer at Guangqi Honda, commented, “Compared to other departments, the measurement needs at the welding assembly are more varied and the usage conditions are also relatively more complicated. The FaroArm has met our needs across all aspects of measurement, resulting in a very attractive cost-performance ratio. This includes tasks like the installation and testing of fixtures, measurement of precise positions of screw and punch holes on a car body frame, dimensional inspection of automotive components and spare parts, as well as the surface scanning of irregular shapes in various materials.”

At present, the team uses the FARO devices on the shop floor nearly every day. When put next to the fixed coordinate measuring machine (CMM), the FaroArm remains unmatched in terms of flexibility and portability for certain applications. Mr. Li explained, “With fixed CMMs, usage is limited to the probe’s rotation angle, making it difficult to measure parts of some complicated fixtures. The FaroArm, however, can perform measurements without those restrictions.”
Mr. Zhang added, “With the FaroArm, the team requires just one hour to inspect fixtures, as compared to three or four hours on the fixed CMM. We have greatly enhanced our efficiency with this change.”
The FaroArm generates graphical reports quickly through non-contact scans.
Having experienced the FaroArm first hand, the technical engineers from the Second Welding Section at Guangqi Honda had high praise for the device. Most commonly, their appraisals included statements such as ‘precise and stable’, ‘attractive cost-performance ratio’, and ‘versatile to meet a wide range of measurement needs’. The team has evidently grown to trust the device as well as FARO.
In addition, the team expressed greater expectations for its partnership with FARO. As both companies continue to flourish in their respective arenas, the team at Guangqi Honda firmly believes that FARO will remain a valued partner for them in the company’s journey of rapid development.
