Eugene Liscio - Webinar SpeakerEugene Liscio is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada and is the owner of ai2-3D, a consulting company that specializes in 3D forensic documentation, analysis and visualizations. Eugene has testified in court in both the US and Canada utilizing 3D technologies such as photogrammetry and laser scanning and has also provided interactive 3D crime scene testimony in court.

Eugene was called to assist the Ontario Provincial Police in the shooting at the Canadian House of Commons and has also worked with the RCMP, OPP, SIU and other police agencies to assist in officer involved shootings.

He is also the Past-President of the International Association of Forensic and Security Metrology (IAFSM) and is a member of Professional Engineers Ontario, the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts, Canadian Identification Society and the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

Currently, Eugene is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto Mississauga, where he teaches a 3D Forensic Reconstruction and Mapping course as part of the Forensic Sciences Program. Eugene is actively engaged in research and validation by mentoring students in areas such as Bullet Trajectory Analysis, Area of Origin Analysis of Bloodstain Impacts, Laser Scanner Accuracy, Clandestine Grave Documentation and 3D Scanning for Autopsies to name a few.

Industrial Plant is one of the most complex industrial infrastructure for the project engineers, owners, and etc. It has a long life cycle that could span over a few decades. They are costly to build and require substantial resources to operate.

Hence, information used for maintenance and operation is critical to success. The challenge we are facing today is in the assets such as pipes, were built before 3D technology was developed. Then, the drawings were constructed on drawing board in 2D format. The process was not only time consuming, it was costly as well.

Throughout the lifespan of the assets, numerous works such as upgrading and revamp were made to maintain the integrity of the structures. However, in the absence of suitable technology, there was no proper recording of the upgrading and maintenance activities. The lack of digital information to track the development of the assets remains a challenge.

As such, discrepancies between the information available on the asset on record and in physical form have been observed.

FARO 3D laser scanning solution enables the conversion of the actual physical asset information into digital or data equivalent; simplifying the process to capture as-built condition of assets. Laser scanning can capture extreme high-resolution 3D data very quickly up to 1 million point/sec without any physical contact. Each of the point/sec scanning data provides X, Y, Z coordinate with intensity value. Data captured in the laser scanner is then transferred to the desktop for designer to process it.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been used for city planning or infrastructure building for decades. Most recently, the applications for leveraging on Building Information Modeling has expanded because of improved scanning technology and expanded software suites for ease of 3D building model creation.

In addition, the heightened awareness of the realizable huge benefits of BIM to companies when used in planning and inspection platforms has continued to drive greater adoption in the construction industry. As a result, BIM implementation has becoming more pervasive in government and private projects.

Laser Scanning in BIM

The first step towards creation of models for use in BIM starts with documenting the existing infrastructures and buildings in the project area. In the past, the capturing of physical is done manually through registration of points with Total Stations or measuring tapes. Thereafter the connection of the points to form a complete building model is created via software. The collection of points on-site had been tedious, inaccurate and time-consuming due to the limitations of the Total stations and other measuring devices.

With the advent of Laser Scanning technology, the Laser Scanner has started to replace Total Stations and traditional measuring devices for capturing of physical structures to translate these point clouds into on-site drawing due to its improved accuracy and speed of scanning. The increased adoption of Laser Scanner has further drove the increased usage of BIM as part of the planning and development processes in the construction industry.
